There’s something incredibly special about photographing a family in their own home — especially when that home is filled with love, character, and a golden retriever named Alfie.

Last weekend, I had the absolute joy of spending the afternoon with a beautiful little family for an in-home photography session in Rockhampton. As a Rockhampton photographer, sessions like this are where my heart really sings — honest moments, real connection, and the kind of storytelling that feels meaningful long after the photos are delivered.

More Than Just Photos: Getting to Know the Family

Before I ever picked up the camera, I spent time getting to know this family and what mattered most to them. Their son Brooklyn was the star of the show — full of curiosity and energy, obsessed with balls, and totally inseparable from Alfie the golden retriever.

Their ideal session wasn’t about stiff poses or matching outfits — it was about capturing real life. Backyard soccer, chasing Alfie, cuddles on the couch, and quiet glances that speak volumes.

From Snuggles to Sprints: Photographing Real Life

We started slowly, with early snuggles after Brooklyn’s nap — soft, quiet, and warm. But soon enough, he was off! Laughing, running, tossing balls (or anything nearby) to Alfie. There was no sitting still, and that was completely perfect.

💡Tip: I always allow plenty of time in my in-home sessions so little ones can take snack breaks, rest, or just do their thing. No pressure, no rushing.

Home Is Where the Story Begins

Their home — a charming old Queenslander — may not be their forever home, but it’s their first together. The creaky floors, high ceilings, and afternoon light filtering through the windows made for a stunning and deeply personal backdrop.

We made a point to photograph the architectural details, the living spaces where they spend their days, and those ordinary corners that mean everything. These details help tell the full story — the one you want to hold onto.

In Between Is Where the Magic Lives

Some of my favourite moments weren’t planned at all. A quick giggle between Mum and Dad. Brooklyn’s serious face mid-throw. Alfie’s ears bouncing in pursuit of a flying tennis ball. These are the in-between moments — where the real memories are.

As a family photographer in Rockhampton, my goal is always to create a space where families feel like themselves — not just for the photos, but for the experience.
