Why Mums Need to Be in the Photos Too

When you scroll back through your camera roll, what do you see? For most mums, it is a collection of snapshots of the kids, maybe a few of your partner playing with them, and plenty of little details of daily life. But how many photos are you actually in?
If you are like most mothers, the answer is: not many. You are usually the one behind the camera, making sure everyone else is remembered.
But here is the thing. One day your children will want to look back and see you. They will want to remember the way you looked at them, the way your arms felt wrapped around them, and the way you laughed when they did something silly. Those moments matter, and they deserve to be documented too.
Why mums avoid the camera
There are so many reasons we hide away:
“I don’t like how I look right now.”
“The house is too messy.”
“The kids aren’t behaving.”
“I’ll wait until I feel more put together.”
But here is the truth. Your children are not waiting for you to lose weight, to find the perfect outfit, or to finally feel confident. They love you exactly as you are today, and that is the version of you they want to remember.
The gift of presence in photos
Being in front of the camera is not about vanity. It is about giving your kids the gift of seeing their mum in the story of their childhood. Imagine them as adults, flicking through family albums and being able to say, “There’s Mum. She was there. She loved us. She played with us.”
Those images become part of your legacy, woven into the history of your family.
How to start showing up in photos
You do not have to book a professional session right away, although of course I would love to help when you are ready. You can start small at home:
1. Hand the camera over
Give it to your partner, your kids, or even a friend. Tell them you want to be included too.
2. Use self-timer or your phone’s portrait mode
Set it up, press the button, and then jump back into the moment. Imperfect is better than absent.
3. Say yes even when it feels uncomfortable
When someone offers to take a photo of you, resist the urge to say no. Say yes, and trust that your kids will see love, not flaws.
4. Book a session just for you and the kids
A Mum & Me session is designed for this very reason. It gives you space to be present while someone else takes care of the camera.
You belong in the frame
You are part of the story. Not just as the organiser, the snack-bringer, or the one waving from behind the lens. As you.
Your children deserve to remember what you looked like when you loved them in the everyday. And you deserve to see yourself there too.
So next time, hand over the phone, set the timer, or say yes to being in the shot. Because one day, those photos will be among the most precious things your children ever hold.
I have an exclusive package just for mums. It is something I am really passionate about so have designed an experience just for mums, with a special price. Mums need to be in the photos, be in yours today
